Design Futures to support Sustainable Food practices

IASDR 2023: Life-Changing Design

To tackle climate change and safeguard human and planet's health, a radical green transformation becomes urgent. The food sector represents one of the largest contributors to carbon footprint production and Earth's degradation. Approximately 20-30% of global human induced GHG emissions is due to food production, processing, and distribution . In this scenario, cutting-edge technologies can be employed to foster innovations within the food sector enabling a green transformation and minimizing negative effects. To creatively envision the possible brighter futures of food, there is an emergent need for new design processes . This is the aim of the Digital Creativity for developing Digital Maturity future skills (DC4DM) European project which disseminates an innovative educational model based on the Design Futures approach to equip new generations of professionals with a future-proof skill set to shape preferable future scenarios. After framing the connection between the food sector and climate change, the paper will introduce the Design Futures process providing a real-life experience of its application in multidisciplinary team of students.

Design of a sensor network for the quantitative analysis of sport climbing

The wall is equipped with force sensors to measure interaction forces between the athlete and the wall, which can be used by experienced instructors, athletes, or therapists, to gain insights into the quality of motion. A specifically designed triaxial load cell is integrated into each hold placement, invisible to the climber, and compatible with standard climbing holds. Data collected through the sensors is sent to an app running on a portable device. The wall can be adapted to different uses. To validate our design, we recorded a repeated climbing activity of eleven climbers with varying degrees of expertise. Analysis of the interaction forces during the exercise demonstrates that the sensor network design can provide valuable information to track and analyze exercise performance changes over time. Here we report the design process as well as the validation and testing of the sensorized climbing wall.

Actual research activity in Robotics Laboratory at Politecnico di Milano, Mechanical Dept

Actual research activity in Robotics Laboratory at Politecnico di Milano, Mechanical Dept., regar... more Actual research activity in Robotics Laboratory at Politecnico di Milano, Mechanical Dept., regards advanced Bio-Robotics as leading topics for both strong technology improvement, such as micro and nanotechnology introduction and application, and health care. This paper deals with innovative solutions in semi-passive electronic controlled above knee prosthesis. As a result, a new tool of signal acquisition is built and tested. New technologies for microsensors production and integration let the device to support wide range input acquisition, elaboration and control. Furthermore, main aspects of biorobotic approach are benefit and comfort for patients wearing artificial leg. For that, innovative solutions in control of the device attached to the patient carry out user-oriented design and high flexibility in motion. The project is developed with the co-operation of INAIL National Prosthesis Centre. In particular, new issues deal with mechanical solution too, in order to get larger eff...

It measures the reaction of a person evaluating in the motion of one finger of the hand the time response, the velocity of phalanxes, the force exerted from the finger against a button. The condition of motion are ballistic motion, controlled motion guided by vision, controlled motion without vision, motion with a virtual reality modelization on the computer screen. The system performs also the requirements for medical applications and with its portability and accordance to European normative for safety and quality, represents a new step towards the possibility of quantitative analysis of the performances of the human hand both of mechanical phenomenon and electromyographic of neuromotor diseases, which provoke a decrease in upper and lower limbs action.

Designing the drivers to boost Digital Creativity and enable Digital Maturity

Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

We live in a society where the centrality of humans in the future will strongly rely on their creative abilities as those who do not creatively innovate risk failure in any domain. Today, emerging digital technologies are reshaping individuals and society and, consequently, creativity is co-evolving too becoming Digital Creativity (Lee and Chen, 2015). We refer to Digital Creativity as the ability to creatively and strategically apply digital technologies to innovate, thereby harnessing human-centred technological innovation to solve complex problems (Bruno, 2021). This ability requires humans to manage a creative design process and develop new Digital Creative Abilities, including, among others, the ability to communicate and collaborate with others to solve complex problems, to understand the cultural and social poten...

Developing Co(Design) Process and Tools to Innovate Education Through Digital Do It Yourself

The current societal trend of digitally enabled self-production (i.e. digital Do-It-Yourself) is ... more The current societal trend of digitally enabled self-production (i.e. digital Do-It-Yourself) is emblematic of the contemporary and diffuse attitude to make and create. It also reflects the new attitude of people to rely on the strengthen of collaboration to improve their life. It has been seen as an opportunity for social and technological innovation based on collaboration and knowledge sharing. These practices and technologies have many potentialities that are changing the world on an everyday and community level (i.e. attitudes to consumption, sustainable solutions and community networks). The resurgence of DIY and craft industries “is a strong indicator that people are seeking ways to express their creativity” [1]. In this context where Digital DIY is playing a leading role in developing a more creative society and where everyone does design, professional designers may have to find their new roles. The paper describes the DiDIY design process as a result of human centred co-desi...

Creativity 4.0. Empowering Creativity in the Digital Era

DS 95: Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE 2019), University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. 12th -13th September 2019, 2019

The digital era and its technologies are having a profound impact especially on the digitally enhanced generation who are growing up with digital habits (TV, cell phones, video games, etc.) which are required to develop new competencies and skills among which human creativity is the most important one. The design education system is struggling to keep up with the demands of these new digital challenges. It has, therefore, become essential for design research to understand the impact of digital technologies on the creative process to develop an appropriate training model for the next digital generation of designers representing the actors of a near future. The objective of this paper is to briefly present the Creativity 4.0 model framed as part of the methodology used to identify the most crucial factors that influence creativity in the digital era. The model allows to explore some condition brought by the digital revolution that could enable or inhibit those factors and that could be of interest for the design educators' community.
