About
The PhD thesis deals with three-dimensional survey methods applied to the geometrical acquisition of Industrial Design products. 3D acquisition techniques are already used in industrial design production but their role in every single process was not yet systematically codified. In addition the level of geometrical complexity of any specific product may highlight limitations by using a single instrument, which can’t supply with good results for all typologies of industrial products. These factors have been critically framed in the current thesis, outlining the definition of object complexity for the best selection of survey method for every situation. The actual limits of 3D acquisition systems are so identified and compared to integrated systems (i.e. systems where different complementary instruments are used together) applied in fields different from Industrial Design. The objective of thesis is to demonstrate the limits of a single instrument application and the necessity to apply multi-resolution system or sensor fusion to solve the larger part of the problems in the 3D acquisition of complex shapes
